Immigrant families, students, and workers are a vital part of our communities and deserve the chance to live in dignity, not in fear. Unfortunately, our legal system is difficult to navigate and does not provide automatic representation for immigrants, leaving them with the option to spend a lot of their money on private attorneys. Our Navigator Program helps immigrants get the information they need to make informed decisions and helps direct them to responsible, qualified, legal help. The Navigator Program trains people, particularly women, on legal services and advocacy with the end goal of becoming a Department of Justice Accredited Representative, which will increase the community’s capacity for taking on immigration cases. Along the way, Navigators become experts in community outreach, public education, and referral. We are expanding this program by offering English instruction alongside Navigator training, so immigrants with limited English can participate and learn how to protect their communities more effectively.
Michigan United is seeking a part-time deputy to assist the Coordinator with administration of the program.
Assist Legal Services Coordinator with recruitment and implementation of our online English Language Program, which teaches the English language through lessons on legal services, advocacy, and civic engagement.
Organize orientation event for participants that includes preliminary testing, as
Maintain engagement for learners while monitoring their participation and improvement on the online portal.
Participate in calls with national staff and organizations to report on the online English Language program updates.
Assist in presentations promoting the online program, the Community Navigator Program, and Census participation.
Assist Legal Services Coordinator at twice-weekly legal clinics. Duties include scheduling appointments, setting up stations, making copies, following up with clients, outreach for clinics, and others needs that may come up during clinics.
Socially-distanced meetings with clients at Detroit office to exchange important documents.

Passionate for developing the leadership of volunteer leaders.
Knowledge of (or willing to learn) navigating our online English Language Program.
Ability to perform with a high degree of skill in a fast-paced work environment.
Excellent judgment in internal and external communication and in managing internal and external relationships.
Highly organized and deadline-oriented.
Bilingual required (Spanish or Arabic will be given preference)
Experience in community organizing, with experience in grassroots leadership development preferred
Fluent speaker of Spanish
Basic literacy in modern office software
Office & field environment with moderate amounts of standing, walking, climbing stairs, ability to lift 25 lbs.
Normal business hours, some additional hours required with frequent Saturday activities.
This position is based in Metro Detroit.
