Director of Digital Research and Development for Voter Participation Center
The Voter Participation Center (VPC) is a results-oriented 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to mobilizing under-represented populations that are vulnerable to diminished political representation – particularly unmarried women, people of color, and young people. The VPC works to make our democracy more representative by engaging these groups through mail-based voter registration, voter turnout, issue education, election protection, and related activities. We use a data-driven, model-targeted approach that leverages repeated randomized controlled trials (field experiments) to measure our impact and identify the most effective tactics. In addition to mail, we run supplemental programs using phone, email, social media, and online advertising. Since 2012, VPC’s programs generated more than 1.4 million voter registration applications.
The VPC seeks a talented and ambitious digital operative seeking to build experience to join our team as the Director of Digital Research and Development (R&D) in our Washington, DC office. The Director of Digital R&D will work with a team of vendors and consultants to manage, expand, and strengthen VPC’s online programs and initiatives and oversee the development of next-generation technology, including thinking critically about how to use digital tools and strategies for voter registration and GOTV in 2016, 2018, and beyond. The Director of Digital R&D will report to the VPC Program Director.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Build a comprehensive digital program for VPC/WVWVAF, ranging from building up email/text/social media followings to devising effective voter registration chase programs to overseeing online advertising. For example, what combination of contacts to a registrant, including mail, e-mail, online ads, and text messages can most efficiently persuade that individual to register?
Design and execute digital registration and mobilization experiments. The VPC cut its cost to register a voter on Facebook by 60% from 2008 to 2012 and we want to cut it by a similar amount again in 2014-2016.
Product manage the development of new digital tools for registration and voting, building on VPC’s recent development of an experimental tool allowing voters to register by text message.
Create innovative partnerships with allied organizations and manage digital consultants.
Bachelor’s degree with at least three years of professional and relevant experience is required.
Strong project management and multi-tasking skills.
Ability to set and manage measurement and analytics to meet program goals.
Experience in digital engagement work with knowledge of digital project management, political or advocacy campaign organizing, and fundraising.
Experience developing and managing online creative campaigns, including the management of vendors, agencies, and large scale email acquisition campaigns.
Proficient digital skills and experience with email, marketing automation, CRM and related data systems, social networking, and web applications.
Excellent web and email writing and editing skills.
